Madeleine
LEngle is a prolific writer
of poetry, fantasy, fiction, autobiography, and non-fictional
commentaries on scripture and the Christian life. Best known
for her 1963 Newbery Awardwinning fantasy, A Wrinkle
in Time and her classic work on faith and art, Walking
on Water, LEngle is the author of over fifty
books, the majority of which remain in print today. She has
been the recipient of numerous awards, medals, and honorary
degrees. For decades, her writing activities were accompanied
by a busy schedule of speaking and teaching,
LEngle is friend to hundreds
and confidant to scores, mother of three, and grandmother
to five. She loves golden retrievers, Bach, words, candlelight
dinners, stimulating conversation, laughter, good jokes, and
quiet moments.
Perhaps Madeleine LEngles
greatest gift is her ability to translate intangible and invisible
things of the spirit, both human and divine, into tangible
and visible concepts and pictures through her stories. Her
great faithnurtured through prayer, worship, the Bible,
and the reading of great booksaccompanies her vivid
and fertile imagination and her appreciation of truth.
"Madeleine LEngle
is one of the wise women not only of our time but of the
ages. She would be comfortable in the company of Sappho
and Sophocles, Dante and Chaucer, MacDonald and Dostoevsky,
and they would rejoice in hers. She understands, as they
did, that, confronted by the mysteries at the heart of the
cosmosthe mysteries of union and separation, of progress
and retreat, of good and evilone must enlist in the
struggle with all ones might and at the same time
bow in awe before the unspeakable beauty and pain and all
that is inexplicable."
Thomas Cahill, author
of How the Irish Saved Civilization, The Gifts of the
Jews, and Desire of the Everlasting Hills

Penguins
& Golden Calves
By Madeleine L'Engle
In
Penguins
and Golden Calves, Madeleine L'Engle uses the startling
beauty of Antarctica as a backdrop for her discussion of how
icons-everyday "windows to God"-reveal to us the
glory of our Maker. She also shows how those icons can become
idols that cripple us spiritually. With captivating stories
and insightful metaphors, L'Engle brings us to a deeper understanding
of the God's presence in our lives.
"Those of you just happening upon Madeleine L'Engle
are to be envied, for when you've finished here, there remains
a generous and provocative body of work for your discovery.
Those of you returning to a treasured friend will not be
disappointed, for you know already that she is chiefly an
apologist for joy-one of the rare ones who consistently
upholds her own definition of art: that which speaks of
what was true, what is true, and what will be true."
-from the foreword by Leif Enger, author of Peace Like
a River
"If
you travel with Madeleine L'Engle through Penguins and
Golden Calves, you will see not only the ordinary objects
and people of our everyday lives but beautiful icons that
reveal the splendor of God. She also alerts us to the danger
of making idols out of icons by looking at them rather than
through them. Her personal reflections are so warm and engaging
that we follow along for pleasure as well as spiritual blessing."
-Chuck Smith, jr., pastor and author
.

The
Rock That Is Higher
By Madeleine L'Engle
"We
are all strangers in a strange land, longing for home, but
not quite knowing what or where home is. We glimpse it sometimes
in our dreams, or as we turn a corner, and suddenly there
is a strange, sweet familiarity that vanishes almost as soon
as it comes
" Madeleine LEngle,
from The Rock That Is Higher
Story
captures our hearts and feeds our imaginations. It reminds
us who we are and where we came from. Story gives meaning
and direction to our lives as we learn to see it as an affirmation
of Gods love and truthan acknowledgment of our
longing for a rock in the midst of lifes wilderness.
Drawing
upon her own experiences, well-known tales in literature,
and selected narratives from Scripture, Madeleine LEngle
gently leads the way into the glorious world of story in The
Rock That Is Higher. Here she acknowledges universal
human longings and considers how literature, Scripture, personal
stories, and life experiences all point us toward our true
home.
